Day 3 – Illinois US 66

By jayjazz · Comments (2)
Sunday, May 4th, 2014

We woke up bright and early today to the most sunshine we have seen since we left home. We had a light breakfast and made a vehicle check, which included securing the brackets of the solar panel with Eternabond tape.

Heading out at about 9:30, we immediately ran into the Red Carpet Corridor Festival, which is an annual multi-municipal destination that runs about half the length of Rt 66 in Illinois.  Following our maps and guide books the rest of the way, we visited some of the most popular attractions such as:

  • The Gemini Giant, Wilmington
  • Polk-a-dot Drive- in, Braidwood
  • Two cell jail house, Gardner
  • Ambler-Becker Texaco, Dwight
  • Odell Station, Odell
  • Pontiac Automobile Museum, Pontiac
  • Murals on Main Street, Pontiac
  • Funks Grove Maple Syrup, Funks Grove
  • The Rail-splitter Covered Wagon, Lincoln
  • Shea’s Gas Station Museum, Springfield
  • Cozy Dog Drive-in, Springfield
  • Pink Elephant Antique Mall/Twisty Treat, Livingston

We had to skip the last handful of attractions because we ran out of daylight & rough roads & road closures forced us onto the main highway. We used Route 55 to get to the outskirts of St. Louis and will now be bedding down at the Pilot travel center in East St. Louis.

First, stop tomorrow will be the Gateway Arch and then we will resume our travels. See you then!

Finally Getting Our Kicks…

By jayjazz · Comments (0)
Wednesday, April 30th, 2014

Tomorrow, we will embark on our month long Route 66 cross country trip in our awesome vintage motorhome, “Lady T”. For the both of us, this has been a long time dream.

When I think about driving cross-country, I remember the countless movies I watched as a kid on late night cable during summer vacations. In those movies, someone was always leaving, arriving, or on the way. To me, exploring the open road represented the ultimate freedom, a feeling I hoped to experience one day.

Over the years, Jay & I have often talked about travelling cross-country but it always seemed like just a dream. Early last year, we started considering the trip more seriously and we realized very quickly there were so many things to consider. Unlike all of those movies, it was not realistic for us to simply jump in an old jalopy and go. How would we travel? Which routes should we choose? When should we go? Could we afford it?

Then last July, we took our  first step towards making our dream a reality. After only a few weeks of actively searching, we found our 1994 Ford Fleetwood Tioga motorhome! From the moment I saw her, I knew she was our rig. When I first stepped inside, I felt like she had always been ours and had just been waiting for us to arrive. In immaculate condition and with an old school look that we loved, she was in a word: perfect.

Fast forward to today. Our checklist has been checked (and re-checked), the mail has been held and as of 8:30AM tomorrow morning, the word “work” has been removed from our vocabulary. We have waited a long time to get here and very soon, we’ll be getting there. We hope that you will come along for the ride…

See you on the road.

Solar Panel Cable Repair

By jayjazz · Comments (0)
Wednesday, April 30th, 2014

The solar panel that was on Lady T when we purchased her was cracked and had a piece missing, so we decided to add a new small 15-watt panel to help keep the coach battery topped off.

The first thing we needed to do was fix the installed cable that was used with the old cable. Have a look at the video and photos below and check out the roof & solar panel update video to follow.

Follow us on Twitter, YouTube and Facebook and don’t forget to subscribe to the blog for updates.

See you on the road!
