The Mother Road

route-66

Here we are, 60 days away from the start of our month long Route 66 road trip. We are planning on making this a mostly Route 66 tour with some detours along the way. Route 66 has been reworked, rerouted and paved over by highways, but there is still a lot of it left and we plan to see as much as possible.

Route 66 is a big part of American history that has greatly deteriorated but we are sure that there is still a lot of unique & beautiful places left to see. Landscapes, run down and preserved historic sites and maybe we will meet a few old timers who are willing to share some stories along the way.

Let’s hope that our 1994 Fleetwood Tioga motorhome can handle the month-long trip, which is sure to be an endurance run. She will be getting new tires, oil changes on the engine and generator and a tune up before we depart. We also will be resurfacing the rubber roof and resealing all the seams up there as well. We did a lot of re-sealing towards the end of last summer so that will save us some work before we go. We plan to add on some gadgets, like a rear-view camera, new radio and speakers (got to have that CD player and AUX jack) and we already have the satellite radio wired up. There is an antenna on the roof but we are leaving the TV at home. We don’t plan on having much time for TV watching!

Our plan is to drive straight from home to Chicago then begin from there. Once we get to Santa Monica, we will zigzag our way home, visiting and seeing as much as we can see along the way and hope to see some friends and family too.

Here are a couple books that we will be using as guides on the road:

Road Trip USA Route 66
Route 66 Adventure Handbook

Also, we just received these cool maps the other day:

So stay tuned, subscribe and follow us everywhere for updates!!!

We are still working on the social media sites so bear with us as we continue to get them up and running.

Camping in Meredith Woods, NH

By jayjazz · Comments (0)
Thursday, February 6th, 2014

This was our second and final trip in the RV for the 2013 season. It was a last minute thing, as we were itching to get back out on the road and spend more time getting to know our new travel companion!

We reserved a site at Meredith Woods Campground based on a recommendation and because the campground operates year round. When we arrived, we immediately noticed that there wasn’t much activity, which was fine by us. We mostly just wanted to relax and enjoy the cool fall air.

As we were checking in, the girl working the front desk decided to take a phone call, which lasted for several minutes while we stood waiting. She didn’t seem too broken up about it but we didn’t protest because she was working alone and appeared to be quite busy.

This time, we requested full hookups and were able to use the heat in the rig for the first time. The furnace started up instantly and worked like it was new all weekend. We didn’t get any rain this time but it did get pretty chilly at night. After hooking up, we stayed inside for the remainder of Friday, enjoying a nice camp dinner and listening to music.

On Saturday, we bundled up and went exploring for a while. It seems that this place would be hoppin’ during the on season, but it was pretty dead in October. We ended up at the rec hall and played a few games of pool before heading back to the rig.

Overall, we weren’t overly impressed with Meredith Woods but we’d like to come back during the busy season to give it another try. If you’re into year-round camping, this is one of the few placed in New England where you can do it.

A Visit from the Police

By jayjazz · Comments (0)
Wednesday, February 5th, 2014

Because I live in a condo community, I don’t have any space to park our 28′ beauty. So last summer, we parked her on the street across from my building.

One day, I drove past the rig to make sure she was OK before I went inside and I noticed what looked like a business card on the driver’s window. After parking my Jeep, I walked over to see what was on the card and was surprised to see that it was from the Massachusetts State Police. On the back, it read “We need to talk about your motorhome.”

I called the police barracks and left a message for the Lieutenant that left the card. I figured someone had complained in some capacity and I was curious to find out what the issue was.

After a few days, I hadn’t heard back so I called and left another message. The next day, I was doing some work on the rig when the Lieutenant pulled up. We began chatting and he informed me that someone did complain about our RV being parked on the street. I was a bit annoyed by this because there are several junk cars parked (permanently) on the property and our rig definitely isn’t junk!

The Lieutenant said he did some research after his initial visit and he couldn’t find any rules or laws against us parking on the street. He stated that as long as I wasn’t taking another residents spot or blocking the road, we were in compliance with local parking regulations. He even offered to let me store the rig on his parking lot over at the station (which is only a 1/4 mile) but I explained that she would be stored for the winter and would be off the street by November 1st.

It’s just a few months before we bring her back out again for the season so I hope that the Grinch who complained will mind their own business this time around!
