Day 20 – The Great Salt Lake

By jayjazz · Comments (0)
Thursday, May 22nd, 2014

We left Winnemucca, NV this morning and set the GPS for Great Salt Lake in Utah. Crossing the border offered some great views and was pretty flat, which was a welcome change over the last couple of days. Entering Utah, the first thing you see is the Great Salt Lake Desert, which is covered with salt and white as far as the eye can see. There are also huge salt mounds and mines all along the highway.

There is a state park adjacent to the lake so we pulled over and parked just outside the gate and started walking. Great Salt Lake is fed by three rivers but has no outlet so it’s always changing in size due to evaporation and drought. We walked about a half mile to reach the shore line, noticing the skeletons of several birds that probably died for lack of food. The wind was pretty fierce and whipped in violent gusts, leaving the taste of salt on our lips. We snapped several photos and made our way back to Lady T to rinse our mouths out and continue on into Salt Lake City.

It has been a long time since I have been to Salt Lake City but it looked mostly the same. They added a light rail system since I was last here but we were able to park on the street for free (after 8PM). We strolled towards downtown but quickly detoured to the Blue Iguana Mexican Restaurant. The food was delicious and with full bellies, we continued to Temple Square, which dates back to 1847 and is a focal point for the Mormon community in Utah. It also houses the world famous Tabernacle Choir. The choir was actually practicing when we arrived and we watched them through the window for a bit. The buildings are all very beautiful and the Square is well kept.

Heading back to Lady T, we walked through an outdoor mall area that was very cool with water fountains and lots of shops. There were also a couple of nice Olympic statues for skiing and figure skating. Salt Lake hosted the winter Olympics in 2002, which was around the last time I was here.

Hitting the highway again, we crossed the border into Wyoming and stayed just over the line in Evanston at another Flying J. Have we mentioned their coffee yet??? ;o) In the morning, we hope to visit the Flaming Gorge and then make our way across the state to Cheyenne to visit my cousin Myra.

Day 19 – The Old West

By jayjazz · Comments (0)
Tuesday, May 20th, 2014

While preparing to depart the Walmart in Reno this morning, I noticed a small puddle of coolant on the ground. After a short investigation, I found that the screw for the clamp that holds the hose onto the bottom of the radiator was a little loose. I tightened that up, checked the oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid and the tire pressure and we were good to roll.

Since we have been putting quite a strain Lady T with these crazy grades, we attempted to find the flattest way possible to Virginia City. Starting in Carson City, we began our ascent up the hills and eventually came upon a sign directing us to a trucks-only route. Although not as bad, this route was still quite steep. The view was beautiful, though, and Jasmine handled it like a pro!

I had visited Virginia City about 10-12 years ago when I worked out here so I knew what it was all about and really wanted Jazz to see it. Virginia City is the same place you see in all the old western movies. It’s an old gold mining town with a bunch of saloons and less gold these days. Most of the business are as old as the town itself, dated to the late 1800s. The buildings and sidewalks are right out of the old west and they perform shootout shows daily. We missed the last show by the time we got into town but we did see one of the β€œcowboys” walking around with his six-shooter and spurs on.

The shops in Virginia City are full of all kinds of things, from tourist staples to handmade goods. We explored several of these, one of which had a singing Ray Charles doll that Jazz played with. The last shop we visited was called The Rainbow Metal Art shop. The owner Jay (great name) had taken over the shop about 11 years ago from a guy that made metal sculptures and figurines out of small motor parts. Jay carves and decorates wooden art, everything from famous cartoon characters to animals. Some of the metal art is still on display and everything in the shop is fantastic. Since Jazz loves handmade stuff, we walked out with wooden Sully and Mike Wazowski from Monsters Inc. Jay signed both pieces and Jazz promised to e-mail him for a custom ferret piece.

It was almost time to hit the road again, but not before having a drink at the world famous Bucket of Blood Saloon. I had been there about 10 or 12 years ago and picked up a t-shirt that I actually had on. I picked out a new t-shirt and we sat down to have a drink at the bar. I took my sweatshirt off and asked if there was a discount for wearing my old shirt. The bartender was happy to see the older design and yelled for a couple other employees to come over and have a look. In the end, we didn’t get a discount but we had fun. We paid for our drinks and I told the waitress I’d be back in another decade for a new shirt.

Leaving Virginia City, we headed north to meet up with Interstate 80 to continue our trek homeward. Still having almost 450 miles of Nevada left, we drove for another 180 miles or so and turned off in Winnemucca, NV at another full-service Flying J. They are awesome, by the way, and have the best truck stop coffee ever and lots of flavored creamers to choose from.

We settled in for the night, had some dinner and hopefully will get caught up on the blog. The rest of the way home, we will try to do at least one fun things a day so you all don’t get bored with us.

Day 18 – The Biggest Little City

By jayjazz · Comments (0)
Tuesday, May 20th, 2014

This morning, we really put Lady T through the wringer as we tried to maneuver the mountainous terrain in Tahoe National Forest. Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America, over 6000 feet above sea level in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Our highest elevation for the day was 7225 feet! We drove into North Tahoe and stopped at the Visitor’s Center for a bit, then continued driving along the lake, taking in the spectacular view as we went. We stopped at a scenic viewing spot to snap some photos…the water is so blue it looks unreal! Unfortunately, we did not make it to the south end of the lake, as Lady T had done all the climbing she could handle for the day.Β Day 18 - Road Trip 2014

After Tahoe, we attempted to drive to Virginia City but there was no easy way to get there in a 28 ft. RV that had just about had it for the day. Frustrated, we sat in a mall parking lot for about an hour and then decided to just drive to Reno. We reached the downtown area at about 6 PM and found parking on the street. We hit all of the downtown casinos so Jasmine could grab dollar chips for her collectionΒ while I was mesmerized by the blinking lights and card tables.Β Β We then drove over to the Peppermill Casino, where I spent many hours back when I worked out here years ago. It is probably the nicest casino in the area. Our last stop was the Atlantis, where I finally played some Black Jack. Holding my own for an hour, I went in with $50 and left with $40…not bad.

The Reno strip is pretty run down but we read an article about how they are adding more nightlife to the area to boost tourism. Since it was Sunday, there wasn’t too much going on so I’m sure it’s livelier on the weekends. It no Vegas but it was cool to visit.

Calling it a night, we made our way to the Super Walmart and leveled off. Made dinner and relaxed for a bit before heading to bed. Tomorrow we will head to Carson City then hopefully Virginia City on the way across the state and aim for Utah.

Day 17 – A San Francisco Treat

By jayjazz · Comments (0)
Tuesday, May 20th, 2014

Most of today was pretty boring (and frustrating). We lost another wheel cover, left our locking gas cap at the gas station and spent a good hour trying to tighten the mirrors on Lady T. It was just after 6 PM as we approached the Bay Bridge on the edge of San Francisco and we found ourselves in near dead stop traffic. There were so many cars trying to get on the bridge that I was beginning to appreciate driving in Boston! Other drivers were kind of rude and wouldn’t allow us to switch into the cash lane for the tolls for several minutes. A decent person finally let us in just as we approached the booth.

We knew at the very least, we had to see the Golden Gate Bridge. Jazz set the GPS for Golden Gate Park and we prayed that we would find someplace to park. As we entered the city, the pace quickened considerably and the roads got a bit hairy. I thought we would be fine and miss most of the hills that San Fran is known for… I was wrong! Following the GPS, we made a left turn and the fun began. We drove up one hill, two, three, four, and on the fifth and highest we had to stop at a red light! The brake pedal almost went through the floor and Jasmine almost cried. I told her to put her foot on the gas and the brakes and just gun it when the light turned green. Like a pro, she got us off the hill and what could have been a really bad scene…for the cars behind us! We made it to Golden Gate Park with brakes intact and hearts pumping.

Jazz said she couldn’t leave San Fran without walking the Haight/Ashbury district. Haight and Ashbury Streets were ground zero for the hippie counter-culture in the late 1960’s. Young people from all over the world gravitated here to experience the β€œSummer of Love” in β€˜67 and the area was home to The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane & Janis Joplin, to name a few. We visited 710 Ashbury Street where the β€œGrateful Dead house” still stands.

We walked Haight for a while and Jazz said it was exactly how she had always imagined it would be. There were smoke shops, dive bars, hippie couture boutiques and small eateries. The area is still home to many hippies and homeless people. We stopped for a few minutes and chatted with a young couple sitting on the street and talked about their two beautiful Pitbulls. We stopped in a place called β€œJammin on Haight” and Jazz was excited to buy a cool tie-dyed t-shirt. After that, we stopped at a Thai restaurant called Siam Lotus and has some wicked Pad Thai and Mango Chicken.

It was getting late and we still hadn’t seen the Golden Gate Bridge. We found a route that would take us across the bridge as we left the city and we hoped there would be a turn off for a viewing spot. We were driving up a small hill and all of a sudden, the bridge was right in front of us…and it was massive! Luckily, there was a rest area/scenic viewing spot so we stopped and I took a bunch of photos. It was cool to see the city at night. You see photographs but it’s nothing compared to seeing it in person.

Reno, Nevada is our next stop so we hit the road and drove as long as we could stay awake, which ended up being about 2 AM. Parking for the night at another safety rest area and will be on the road again in the morning heading towards Lake Tahoe.

If you’re going to San Francisco, be sure to wear a flower in your hair…and take a car!

Day 16 – The End of the Line

By jayjazz · Comments (0)
Sunday, May 18th, 2014

What could top a cruise around some of the most famous neighborhoods in Los Angeles? How about finishing our Route 66 tour and exploring the beautiful beaches Santa Monica Pier and Venice! We stayed at the RV park until almost Noon and set out for the world famous Santa Monica Pier. On the way out, Jazz asked the front desk folks if they had any suggestions for parking. The young man she spoke to said he wasn’t aware of any place that allowed RV parking. We were going no matter what so we drove the short 15 minutes to the pier and thought we’d try our luck.

Route 66 actually started from the opposite end of where we came in the day before but we didn’t want to back track because of the traffic. We did see a few 66 business as we looped around Santa Monica Boulevard in search of a parking lot. After driving past a couple of enclosed lots, we followed signs that brought us directly to the Pier parking lot. When we approached the payment booth, we saw that RV parking was allowed…for $48! Still better than Boston!

Day 16 - Route 66 - 2014The attendant told us the lot closed at 2 AM and we intended on getting our money’s worth. First stop, of course, was the Santa Monica Pier. This was the end of the line, the Holy Grail for 66 road trippers coming from the East. WE FINALLY MADE IT!!!

The first thing we saw as we approached the boardwalk was The Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. restaurant. We are both rabid Forrest Gump fans so we walked in to check out the gift shop. A t-shirt and three ping pong balls later, we were making our way to the end of the pier. The place was teeming with excitement. Tourists from all over crowded the ice cream stand and midway style games, small vendors promised to fit your name on a grain of rice, and screams of delight echoed through the cool Pacific air from the Ferris wheel. This is the stuff that countless songs have been written about. Sun, sand, and good times.

After exploring the pier, Jazz wondered where the famous carousel was hiding. Turns out we missed it on the way in. Heading back to the entrance, we found the carousel hiding in a small building. I bought a couple of tickets and we rode two of the inside horses. It’s not fun if they don’t go up and down!

Having our fill (for now) of the pier, we decided to take a walk down Santa Monica Boulevard. After a few minutes, we came upon the 3rd Street Promenade. This is a popular strip with lots of shopping and culture. About half way down, we stopped to listen to a couple of street musicians who played an awesome cover of Sade’s Smooth Operator. The term they used for their version of the song was β€œrastafied” Indeed it was!

Our next stop was Venice Beach. We weren’t sure how far of a walk it was so we jumped on the Big Blue Bus (LA’s public transportation system). We were dropped off right in front of the huge β€œVENICE” sign strung up over the street. This is another famous strip, full of murals, shops, & street performers, all vying for your attention. We watched a man walk on glass and a troupe of insane street dancers. After walking a bit, we decided to rent a couple of bikes. We rode up and down the strip, passing a huge skateboard park and of course, Muscle Beach. Picked up a few trinkets and then headed back to the bus stop.Day 16 - Route 66 - 2014

Unfortunately, we took the wrong bus back to Santa Monica Blvd. so for a dollar each, we got the β€œscenic” tour of the area πŸ˜‰ We finally arrived back to the pier about an hour later. Earlier, we took a few pics of a Route 66 sign at a booth that was closed. It was now open and we spoke with the gentleman inside for a bit. He congratulated us on the completion of our trip and mentioned that he had toured 66 twice himself. He shared some tips & trivia and then directed us to the Will Rogers Memorial, which was in Palisades Park. We took a few pictures and then returned to the beach for the beautiful sunset over the Pacific Ocean.

We sat on the beach for a while as the light disappeared from the sky and walked back up to the pier. It was truly packed now. Jazz played the shooting water game and won a Minion from Despicable Me and owned Whack-a-mole to win a giant glazed chocolate donut. Of course, I had some ice cream and Jazz had a funnel cake to top off the evening. Back in Lady T, we took a little nap before heading out again at 1:30 AM. On the way to San Francisco, we found a rest area at about 4 AM and stopped for more rest. San Fran is still hours away and we will have to tackle the task of parking when we get there.

Don’t forget… Even though we finished our Route 66 Tour we still have to drive home stopping along the way. We are going to San Francisco, Reno Nevada area, Idaho, Colorado and maybe a stop in Wyoming this week. So continue to follow us on FB and subscribe to the Blog.
