Safety Tips for Dry Camping in Rest Stops & Parking Lots

By jayjazz · Comments (0)
Monday, March 16th, 2015

Staying safe and secure while dry camping (boondocking) is easy if you maintain situational awareness. Situational awareness is simply being conscious of who and what is around you and remaining alert in order to make quick and correct decisions.

An easy way to keep your RV secure is to always park where there is plenty of light. This will deter anyone who may be searching for an easy target. A perpetrator is more apt to be seen if you are in a well-lit area and you are more likely to notice someone’s shadow as they approach your rig.

You should always keep your doors locked when parked and make sure to look before you exit. Check outside your windows on all sides and always exit with another person, if possible. It’s also a good idea to keep a light on inside while sleeping or if you have to leave your RV for an extended period of time. If someone comes upon your rig, having a light on will make it more difficult for them to determine if there is someone inside.

If you need to go inside a store or truck stop at night, we recommend as little socializing as possible. Some people may be genuinely friendly but those intent on causing harm have ways to get information out of you by initiating random conversation. If you do speak to strangers, be cautious of what you say and don’t disclose personal details about yourself or your destination. For example, you shouldn’t tell a stranger that you are traveling alone or broadcast what you have in your RV. Additionally, don’t flash a lot of cash around. Select a secure spot for cash and important papers and leave them there. Carry only what you need and always get a receipt for purchases. Provide as little temptation as possible.

Concerning firearms, you should research the laws for each state that you will be traveling in to determine if they recognize your firearms permit. Every state has its own laws and permitting process. There may be federal transport laws that would allow you to transport the firearm but it would likely need to be locked, unloaded and separate from ammunition. There are serious consequences for violating interstate firearms laws so take the time to research!

Another option to consider is a pellet or BB gun. Most states require that an individual is 18 or older to purchase a pellet or BB gun and anyone younger would need to be under adult supervision. The more well-made models are indistinguishable from a real firearm and could act as a distraction long enough for you to get to safety. Again, check the laws for each state that you will be traveling in.

Other weapons that you can carry on your person or in your rig include pocket knives, mace (check the laws for each state), a stun gun (check the laws for each state), or a good old-fashioned club. Many truck stops sell tire thumpers that are designed to check tire pressure on big rigs but double as a solid self-defense club.

Although it’s impossible to foresee everything that may occur while you’re on the road, following these tips can help you can avoid many unpleasant experiences. Preparedness is the key to travel safety!

Be safe and have fun!

The Cape

By jayjazz · Comments (0)
Tuesday, September 30th, 2014

Our last camping trip for the season brought Lady T to scenic Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where we chose the Cape Cod Camp Resort in Falmouth for our stay. Commonly referred to as simply “The Cape”, Cape Cod is a collection of small towns & islands jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean in Eastern Massachusetts. As a whole, the Cape is a huge tourist destination but it is perhaps most famous for Martha’s Vineyard & Nantucket, two small summer colonies that attract visitors from all over. After a busy summer, we were both looking forward to a long weekend relaxing and exploring the area.

We arrived at the campground at about 2:30 PM on Thursday, September 4th, checked in and drove down to our site. We initially experienced some frustration with confirming our reservation but the office staff were friendly & helpful. Our site was situated on a shallow slope & was spacious & clean. We got Lady T squared away & then took a short bike ride around the campground to check out the amenities. The property was much larger than we expected & included two pools, a playground, dog park, game room, beach with rental boats & two bathhouses! The Cape 2014

Jay decided to take a swim before dinner so we looped back around to the campsite so he could change. The larger of the two pools was already closed for the season so we rode our bikes to the smaller pool, which also had a separate hot tub. After a quick swim, it was back to Lady T for dinner and relaxing by the fire.

Friday morning, we took a taxi over to the ferry terminal and boarded the Island Queen ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. It was a quick but scenic 40 minutes to “TheVineyard”. We had planned to rent scooters to explore the island but our taxi driver informed us that the roads were very narrow and dangerous for inexperienced riders. Even though we both own motorcycles, we opted to rent a car instead, which ended up being a little cheaper. Our ride for the day was a 2014 Fiat convertible…a cute little car that was tiny enough for the island’s narrow roads.

We were both hungry by this point so I searched online for a vegan-friendly eatery in the area & came up with a place called the Scottish Bakehouse in Vineyard Haven. It looked interesting & the reviews were good so off to the Bakehouse we went. Ordering our food was pretty quick but it all went downhill from there. The gal at the register charged my credit card for someone else’s order and then told me she couldn’t provide a receipt for the credit. When I asked to speak to the manager, the cook came out and offered to give me the number for the charge software company so I could confirm the credit with them.(?) After waiting for about 5 minutes for our food, another person informed me that the “all day breakfast” item I ordered was not available. I was considerably aggravated but was happy when the food finally came out. The stir fry I ordered was mediocre and apparently wasn’t vegan after all. I had about three bites when I pulled a long disgusting hair out of my mouth! Needless to say, I received a full refund for our entire order & was so disgusted that I didn’t eat anything else until several hours later. The island redeemed itself at Fat Ronnie’s burgers in Oak Bluffs, where I had the most delicious handmade vegan burger, hair free.

Spending  the remainder of the afternoon exploring we visited Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, Edgartown (including the Edgartown Lighthouse) & Tisdale, picking up a few doodads and watching all of the tourists. In Oak Bluffs, we visited a unique store called The Lazy Frog. The Lazy Frog offers many cool toys, old and new, and is a one-stop shop for all things disc golf. We chatted for a while with Jake, the proprietor, and he explained the story behind the Lazy Frog. You can visit The Lazy Frog online at http://lazyfrogmv.com/.

We also visited a few of the beaches to search for shells & beach glass. When the time came to return the car & hop on the Island Queen back to the mainland, I was happy to be going back to camp. I have to admit that we were definitely underwhelmed with Martha’s Vineyard & wouldn’t return anytime soon. I guess it’s not for everyone but you don’t know until to make the trip. By the time we got back to the campground, it was dark. We switched on our lights & enjoyed a burrito dinner by the campfire.

Saturday we had rented a car, a Hyundai Elantra from Enterprise, & spent the day cruising around the mainland, stopping at several yard sales along the way. We visited the historic downtown area of Woods Hole & stopped at the Nobska Point Lighthouse, where a wedding party was just departing. We waited for everyone to clear out so we could take some pictures and then cruised around the small stretch of coast we had access to. It was a gloomy day so there wasn’t much else going on in the area.

We returned to camp just after dusk and stowed our spoils for the day, which included an awesome wind spinner I picked up at a yard sale and lots of cool shells! After dinner, we enjoyed the rest of the evening by our last campfire of the season (maybe), taking in the smells and sounds that make camping so wonderful.

Sunday morning, Jay returned the rental car while I packed up camp & then we headed home. We are looking forward to spending the cold months planning our extended excursion for 2015! Stay with us through the fall and winter, as we will continue to post videos from our Route 66 road trip. See you on the road!

Camping at the Red Apple

By jayjazz · Comments (0)
Friday, August 1st, 2014

After returning home from out Route 66 adventure in May, we couldn’t wait to schedule a couple of camping trips with Lady T. This past weekend, we trekked up to Maine to camp at the Red Apple Campground in Arundel.

Anytime we visit Maine, our first stop is always the Kittery Trading Post. We bought a bag of the aromatic roasted pecans they sell and wandered around the store for a while. After leaving the trading post, we stopped at the supermarket and a dollar store, arriving at the campground at about 3 PM. Lady T started sputtering after only an hour on the road, so we were bummed out that the recent transmission flush and filter replacement didn’t fix the problem.

Added Maine To Our Map

Red Apple is situated on 15 acres of well-manicured paved sites, most of which are home to permanent park models & travel trailers. There are also a handful of tent sites for some old school camping enjoyment. We were checked in by Dave, the owner of the property, who pleasantly & efficiently ran down the list of available amenities, such as unlimited free coffee & WIFI, and made several recommendations for things to do in town. Our site was very close to the recently renovated bathhouse and offered a fire pit nestled in between two small trees. We had plenty of space to set up our tandem chair & hammock, Jay’s favorite camping accessory! After releasing Lady T’s awning and connecting our new mini motorhome lights, we took our bikes for a ride around the campground. It’s not hard to see why Red Apple is rated a “10” for park appearance in the Good Sam RV Travel guide.

We spent the rest of the afternoon lounging & taking in the wonderful smells of the campfire & our neighbors grill. After dark, we made smores and relaxed with some music before heading to bed. Our plan for Saturday was to head into “town”, i.e. Kennebunkport, and rent scooters to cruise the coast. We didn’t bring a tow vehicle so this would be the only way we could get around.

Kennebunkport is a wealthy coastal town known for its geography, lobster rolls and of course, the Bush family summer compound. The epicenter of this bustling tourist area is Dock Square. Unfortunately, our plans were stalled when we discovered that the only scooter rental business in town no longer rented them and was now into sales only! Since we didn’t bring $1500 for a new scooter, we headed up to the office to ask if there was a shuttle or bus we could walk to. We were surprised to learn that Red Apple offered a free shuttle service for their customers to and from town!

We hitched a ride with Dave in his GMC Yukon Denali and arrived in Dock Square just before Noon. We spent the next four hours walking around Kennebunkport & neighboring Kennebunk, exploring the many shops & galleries. We ordered onion rings and fries at the famous Clam Shack and had dessert at the Ben & Jerry’s store. We attempted to catch the tour trolley, which stops at all the local beaches & the Bush compound, but the tours had been cut short due to a wedding. We called Dave when we were ready to go and he promptly picked us up and returned us to our camp site…what service!

We found Beb’s Family

The rest of the evening was spent hanging out by the campfire. After dark, I brought out my Flowlights, which are basically led glow sticks on paracord, and spun then around for a while. Several of the kids from the neighboring campsite and a few dads, too, came over to our site for the show.

The folks at the Red Apple Campground really impressed us so we will definitely be back. We also plan on returning to Kennebunkport by car so we can visit the beaches and maybe sneak a glimpse of the Bushes sunbathing 😉 Don’t forget to visit the blog for future posts on the bunk repair we will begin working on in August and our trip to Cape Cod in September!

Camping in Meredith Woods, NH

By jayjazz · Comments (0)
Thursday, February 6th, 2014

This was our second and final trip in the RV for the 2013 season. It was a last minute thing, as we were itching to get back out on the road and spend more time getting to know our new travel companion!

We reserved a site at Meredith Woods Campground based on a recommendation and because the campground operates year round. When we arrived, we immediately noticed that there wasn’t much activity, which was fine by us. We mostly just wanted to relax and enjoy the cool fall air.

As we were checking in, the girl working the front desk decided to take a phone call, which lasted for several minutes while we stood waiting. She didn’t seem too broken up about it but we didn’t protest because she was working alone and appeared to be quite busy.

This time, we requested full hookups and were able to use the heat in the rig for the first time. The furnace started up instantly and worked like it was new all weekend. We didn’t get any rain this time but it did get pretty chilly at night. After hooking up, we stayed inside for the remainder of Friday, enjoying a nice camp dinner and listening to music.

On Saturday, we bundled up and went exploring for a while. It seems that this place would be hoppin’ during the on season, but it was pretty dead in October. We ended up at the rec hall and played a few games of pool before heading back to the rig.

Overall, we weren’t overly impressed with Meredith Woods but we’d like to come back during the busy season to give it another try. If you’re into year-round camping, this is one of the few placed in New England where you can do it.
