Day 20 – The Great Salt Lake

By jayjazz · Comments (0)
Thursday, May 22nd, 2014

We left Winnemucca, NV this morning and set the GPS for Great Salt Lake in Utah. Crossing the border offered some great views and was pretty flat, which was a welcome change over the last couple of days. Entering Utah, the first thing you see is the Great Salt Lake Desert, which is covered with salt and white as far as the eye can see. There are also huge salt mounds and mines all along the highway.

There is a state park adjacent to the lake so we pulled over and parked just outside the gate and started walking. Great Salt Lake is fed by three rivers but has no outlet so it’s always changing in size due to evaporation and drought. We walked about a half mile to reach the shore line, noticing the skeletons of several birds that probably died for lack of food. The wind was pretty fierce and whipped in violent gusts, leaving the taste of salt on our lips. We snapped several photos and made our way back to Lady T to rinse our mouths out and continue on into Salt Lake City.

It has been a long time since I have been to Salt Lake City but it looked mostly the same. They added a light rail system since I was last here but we were able to park on the street for free (after 8PM). We strolled towards downtown but quickly detoured to the Blue Iguana Mexican Restaurant. The food was delicious and with full bellies, we continued to Temple Square, which dates back to 1847 and is a focal point for the Mormon community in Utah. It also houses the world famous Tabernacle Choir. The choir was actually practicing when we arrived and we watched them through the window for a bit. The buildings are all very beautiful and the Square is well kept.

Heading back to Lady T, we walked through an outdoor mall area that was very cool with water fountains and lots of shops. There were also a couple of nice Olympic statues for skiing and figure skating. Salt Lake hosted the winter Olympics in 2002, which was around the last time I was here.

Hitting the highway again, we crossed the border into Wyoming and stayed just over the line in Evanston at another Flying J. Have we mentioned their coffee yet??? ;o) In the morning, we hope to visit the Flaming Gorge and then make our way across the state to Cheyenne to visit my cousin Myra.

Day 9 – The Santa Fe Trail

By jayjazz · Comments (0)
Saturday, May 10th, 2014

It was a nice change last night to stay in an RV park instead of a Walmart parking lot or a truck stop! We were able to settle in a little early and get laundry done, clean the β€œhouse” and take a little walk to snap some pictures. Stepping into the park office was like stepping back in time. There were a bunch of magazines from the mid-1960s that you could browse through while listening to the wobbly ceiling fan keeping its own rhythm.

We got going just after 10AM, stopping at the Santa Rosa travel center for a bit then returning to 66 on a pre-1937 route up to Las Vegas, NM. There was supposed to be an older hotel but when we got there the building had been changed and converted into an inter-modal station on the rail line with a little visitor’s center.

Leaving Las Vegas, we jumped on the Santa Fe Trail/Old 66 and skipped a couple small towns on our way to Santa Fe. We were aiming for the Miraculous Staircase, which was supposedly built by a β€œmysterious carpenter” back in 1870 inside the Loretto Chapel. He showed up with tools and a donkey built the staircase and then disappeared without pay or thanks.

Day 9 - Route 66 - Road Trip 2014Our adventure in Santa Fe was unique. After maneuvering the narrow one-way streets to find some place to park we ended up taking up two metered spots from where we wanted to be. Downtown Santa Fe had lots of great shops and vendors. The vendors set up on the common were all America Indians selling their crafts. All of the items were handmade and beautiful. One of the vendors we spoke to said that in order to get a permit to sell at that spot you had to be both the artist, Native American and your products had to be 110% hand made. Awesome!

Returning to Lady T, we had a classic J&J moment. Getting into our parking spot was tricky, as there was a tree with low hanging branches and Jasmine guided me in so we didn’t catch anything on the roof. Upon leaving, Jazz was paying attention to the branches and didn’t notice we were a little too close to a parking meter. Ouch!! We didn’t like the bumper cover anyway.

Luckily, the cover is still on and was already previously damaged. We pulled into a parking lot across from a Whole Foods so Jazz could get some food and we could tape up the bumper. While doing so, we ran into a nice older couple from California who travel in their RV to teach acupuncture all over the country. Dan, the gentlemen, spent a few moments looking at our atlas and recommended several nice spots along the Cali coast to visit.

On our way to Albuquerque, we stopped at a couple of small towns for photos and just enjoyed the scenic sunset over the New Mexico buttes, mesas and plateaus. Very beautiful lands out here… everything is either red dirt or brown with some green. There was also a pretty purple plant that we couldn’t identify and it was the only other color out there.

We finally crossed the Rio Grande and arrived in Albuquerque where we saw some cool neon signs on a part of the 18 mile Route 66 strip. Found ourselves a Flying J truck/RV stop just on the outskirts of the city and will be spending the night here overlooking the city lights below.

Tomorrow we should finish up New Mexico and get into Arizona. We have driven 2790 miles since we left home a week ago and Lady T is being worked hard so it’s almost time for an oil change. We plan to visit a Camping World in the next couple of days to have her looked at.

Special Post – A Visit to the Past

By jayjazz · Comments (0)
Tuesday, May 6th, 2014

Along Route 66, in a small town called Paris Springs, there is what appears to be just another small old time gas station. A historic Route 66 sign reads β€œGay Parita” and it certainly appears worth a stop to take a few pictures.

We did exactly that yesterday afternoon and by the time we left, we came away with much more than pictures. Lena β€œMom” Turner came out to greet us and we sat for a while in the shade, Enjoying the beautiful Ozark breeze, Mom and I talked about a whole bunch of things, from Route 66 tours to her children, and I realized that there was nowhere else I would rather be at that moment. This is what America has lost as time keeps moving forward. This is what travelers from all over the world come to find on the Mother Road.

Eventually, Gary Turner came out for a talk and then he and Jay disappeared in the office for a while. He autographed a wonderful photo of the station for us and offered some tips on where to visit next (see his hand drawn map below!). We spent just over an hour with these wonderful people and when it was time to leave, I felt happy. If we were to find nothing else of interest on America’s Main Street, it would be fine by me. Our visit to the Gay Parita will be one of the thousands this year but to us, it was a once in a lifetime experience.

Thank you, Gary & Mom, for the wonderful memory!

Day 5 – I Don’t Think We’re in Kansas Anymore

By jayjazz · Comments (0)
Tuesday, May 6th, 2014

Greetings from Miami… Oklahoma that is!

Today we completed the 66 tour of Missouri and the 13.5 miles of 66 in Kansas. Our first order of business was to locate an RV park to fill up our fresh water tank. Luckily, there was one right across from where we slept. Had to pay a fee for the water but we dumped for free the day before at the Meramec Caverns campground.

Just as soon as we got onto 66 in St. Robert we found ourselves in Uranus. This place shouldΒ be called Man Town USA. Right as you enter Uranus (yes I said that) there is a huge complex with a Day 5 - Route 66 - Road Trip 2014party bar and grill, a tattoo parlor, gun shop and a Gentleman’s club. Although it looked all closed up at 9:30 in the morning, I am sure it’s pretty full at night, despite the huge billboard directly across the street that warns travelers about the evils or pornography.

From there, we headed west and stopped at Mr. Cs Route Post in Lebanon. This was a pretty cool souvenir shop with a nice jukebox playing the oldies as we shopped. We picked up just a couple things. Trying to spread out the shopping since I am sure we will be seeing lots of shops like this one. Speaking of shops, we happened upon what is supposed to be the world’s largest gift store. Yes! It was pretty big and we had ourselves a good time playing with the toys and Β  Β  trying on the goofy hats. Then we made a quick stop across the parking lot to the candy shop for a treat.

It sure was a beautiful day for driving. It was about 88 degrees and sunny which made cruising the small two lane back roads of Missouri pleasurable. The picturesque scenery makes you want to just stop and stay for a while.

There are a lot of museums along the Route 66 road, but if we stopped and explored all of them we would never make it home. We did however stop & chat for a spell with Gary Turner & β€œMom” at the famous Gary’s Gay Parita. See our separate post on this location. It was such a special part of the trip we thought it should have a post of its own.

Winding through Springfield, Carthage and Joplin we eventually crossed the border into Kansas. Kansas has the smallest portion of Route 66 at only 13 miles or so but there is plenty to see. We found the Cars on the Route 66, formerly 4 Women on the Route, where the movie Cars got its inspiration for some of the characters.

We ended our traveling day just after crossing the border into Oklahoma, where we are about to get some shut eye in a Walmart parking lot in the town of Miami (pronounced my-AM-uh) . Oklahoma will be the longest stretch of Route 66. The old original was deliberately designed to cut clear across the state and we are looking forward to a mostly straight forward route.

Day 4 – The Spirit of St. Louis

By jayjazz · Comments (0)
Monday, May 5th, 2014

Another sunshine morning here in the mid-west! We got a little bit of a late start yesterday but accomplished a lot. The place we stayed on Saturday night was just on the border of the two states, otherwise we would have had to go through St. Louis to find a good place to spend the night.

Jumping the border from East St. Louis IL to St. Louis, our first stop was the Gateway Arch in downtown St. Louis, overlooking the mighty Mississippi River. The Arch is a monument to Louis & Clark and the Westward Expansion. It is the tallest monument in the nation at 630 feet. Jazz decided not to go to the top, as it was pretty busy, but I have been up there previously when I worked out here back in 2003.

After the Arch, we found the Blueberry Hill CafΓ©, which is also downtown and where Chuck Berry performs once a month. It was filled with lots and lots of iconic memorabilia that included a Pac-Man room with a tabletop Pac-Man game and a giant game level on one wall.

We are discovering that Route 66 can be tough to follow! We had a little trouble staying on track in the St. Louis area but were able to find it again just outside the city in Kirkwood.

A must see attraction on our list was the Meramec Caverns. We took the tour, which brings you 360 feet underground at the lowest point. The natural formations were extraordinary and the history of the caverns is pretty cool.

We continued to drive as the sun slowly set over the beautiful Ozark countryside, stopping at several attractions that caught our eye such as:

  • Β Cuba, The Mural City and home of the famous Wagon Wheel Motel
  • Β The world’s largest rocking chair, Fanning-Rosati
  • Β The Mule Trading Post on the outskirts of Rolla

We chose another Pilot Flying J truck stop as our resting place last night and Monday we will start our day in the St. Robert and the Devil’s Elbow area. We will finish Missouri and zip through Kansas, which is the shortest portion of Route 66.

Have a look at the photos and don’t forget to follow us on FB for updates throughout the day and subscribe to the Blog.
